Individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the local community have been recognised through the Community Champions initiative, supported by the Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset. The initiative was designed to honour people who have shown exceptional dedication through voluntary service, charitable work and ongoing support for local groups and organisations. These unsung heroes play a vital role in strengthening community life, often working quietly behind the scenes to make a significant difference to the lives of others.
Successful nominees were invited to a special reception at Leigh Court, where their achievements were formally acknowledged and celebrated. The event brought together community volunteers, local leaders and dignitaries to pay tribute to the commitment and generosity of those who give their time to help others.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, supported by the councils, encouraged residents to nominate local people deserving of recognition, resulting in a wide range of nominations from across the community. Alongside many individual nominees, the awards also recognised the valuable contribution made by local community groups. Representatives from Portishead Tea and Tech, Turn the Tide in Portishead, Portishead in Bloom, Gordano Community Cars, Pill Community Foundation and Food Hub were among those attending the celebration, highlighting the strength and diversity of volunteering in the local community.
The event provided an opportunity for the community to say thank you to the volunteers, organisers and community champions whose dedication helps make Portishead, North Weston, Pill and Easton-in Gordano such vibrant and supportive places to live. Their efforts continue to have a lasting and positive impact on local residents, and the evening served as a fitting celebration of their achievements.
