Representing the Lord-Lieutenant, Rear Admiral Ian Moncrieff CBE DL attended the seafront march past and subsequent presentation ceremony granting the Freedom of the Town to the Weston-super-Mare crew of the RNLI. I was also invited to speak and to present a 20-year service medal to one of the crew. Only 4 such Freedoms have been awarded in Weston and the most recent one was 10 years ago for 40 Commando Royal Marines. It was apposite for the lifeboat crews this year as it coincides with the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the RNLI. The RNLI have had a lifeboat team in Weston since 1882. The Weston-super-Mare Sea and RM Cadets and Band also took part in what was a wonderful celebratory and pubic recognition event for the crews, their supporters and their families.
